Gary O’Neil says Wolves had a player who was actually ‘excellent’ in 6-2 defeat to Chelsea

Wolves were thrashed 6-2 by Chelsea at Molineux in their second Premier League game of the season.

After a decent first-half, Gary O’Neil‘s side fell apart against the Blues, conceding three goals to Noni Madueke in 14 minutes.

Wolves were all over the place defensively, with the left side of Toti Gomes and Rayan Ait-Nouri really struggling in particular against Madueke and Cole Palmer.

It was a really tough day at the office for Wolves.

But there were actually a few positives to take for the manager – and one of those was the performance of Jorgen Strand Larsen up top.

Jorgen Strand Larsen was praised after his debut against Arsenal, and he was undeniably a bright spark for Wanderers in the 6-2 loss to Chelsea.

Strand Larsen was a willing runner throughout, and was always looking for through balls.

He pulled out wide at times, and also showed to feet to try and link play.

And just before half-time, Strand Larsen’s performance got the goal it deserved, as he tucked home a header after a ball across from Toti from an Ait-Nouri free-kick.

He didn’t see as much of the ball in the second-half as Chelsea ran all over Wolves.

But he did well, and after the game, O’Neil made sure to praise the Norwegian. He told Sky Sports: “I thought he was excellent, Jorgen. I thought in a tough second-half as well he kept going and kept fighting.

“Maybe should have scored again, had a great chance in the middle of the goal. But we created a lot of chances, but we weren’t trustworthy enough to carry out our jobs and our roles to stick close enough to what we needed to be.”

Strand Larsen can hold his head high

This was a tough day at the office for Wolves, but Strand Larsen can be pleased with his personal showing.

The Norwegian managed to open his account, but his all-round play was really good. And as O’Neil said, he never stopped working.

He appears to be everywhere; running the channels, dropping deep and also getting in the box.

He has the feeling of a player who will be quite popular at Molineux, and hopefully he gets a good level of service in his first season at Molineux.

Playing with Matheus Cunha close to him is bound to help, with the pair already looking to have a good understanding of one another.
