Gary O’Neil didn’t have the time during the summer to organise a proper rebuild at Wolves, which has left him ‘a bit worried’ over his squad.
Wolves only hired Gary O’Neil days before the opening weekend trip to Old Trafford, resulting in an unfortunate 1-0 loss.
But now with January on the horizon and some momentum being built, O’Neil has his eyes on some acquisitions.
The Old Gold boss has emphasised his desire to bring in some experience after a lot was lost during the summer.
Ruben Neves was one lost who brought huge experience and now in his place is a young midfield group including the likes of Tommy Doyle who O’Neil believes is excellent.
Speaking with Express and Star, O’Neil highlighted his concerns and explained his primary needs at Wolves.

O’Neil says Wolves are lacking experience
After beating Bournemouth, O’Neil began to explain his concerns regarding his squad as he said: “To be honest, I’m a bit worried about squad depth, We do have a small squad at this moment and we’ll hopefully look to address a couple areas in January.”
Continuing, O’Neil said that Wolves have a young squad which he hopes some experienced signings could help mould.
“Everyone knows the turnaround we’ve had, it was like 40 players in and out in the summer. We lost an awful lot of experience. The two centre-midfielders that we picked (on Saturday) are 21 and 22 years old and have about 20 Premier League games between them. So the group is young and needs help to progress.
“We’ve got some fantastic talent in it but we’ve lost a lot of experience so there is a transition. Thankfully at this moment, we’re handling it well but we’re keen not to get carried away. I’m sure throughout a Premier League season that there’s going to be some tough moments for us where we need to dig in and fight. I’m not getting too carried away, but like I said, pleased to get to 11 points at this moment.”
Who will Wolves look to sign?
If Wolves are looking for an experienced midfielder in January there are multiple options we could see them going for.
Raphael Veiga has been linked with Wolves, with reports going as far as saying a deal for January is already agreed.
Alternatively, Wolves could look in the Premier League however any attainable name here would likely be a disappointing signing for fans.
With Mario Lemina the only experienced player in midfield, Wolves could be forced to react and therefore an experienced midfield addition can’t be ruled out.
