Gary O’Neil left so impressed by £60k-a-week Wolves star despite Arsenal defeat

Wolves crashed to a 2-1 defeat against Premier League leaders Arsenal yesterday – but Gary O’Neil had praise for Matheus Cunha after the match.

Wanderers came up just short in north London with goals from Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard early on making it a difficult contest.

Wolves only really came into the game late in the second-half and realistically, the 2-1 scoreline did flatter the visitors.

Arsenal just had too much in the end, and Wolves really missed the suspended Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes in midfield.

Wolves knocked on the door at the end after Matheus Cunha had given the team hope – and after the game, Gary O’Neil lavished praise on the Brazilian attacker…

Arguably, Cunha was Wolves’ best player yesterday. It was a struggle for him given Arsenal had most of the ball, but he looked exciting when he got on it and he looked to make things happen.

He took his goal superbly well. He was on hand to curl the ball into the top corner with power with his weak foot for his fourth of the season.

His strike gave Wolves hope but sadly there was to be no second goal for Wolves.

But it’s another good moment for Cunha, and his manager is certainly pleased with what he is bringing to the table. O’Neil said (Wolves official): “He’s a top player. Some of his moments today where he was able to walk past their defenders in the penalty area, I think one was Declan Rice, who is not easy to get past, and his shot hits Raya in the face, and he has those individual moments where he can turn on and turn games.”

Cunha is now up to six goals in total for Wolves in 35 games.

Cunha is having a great season

It was a great performance from Cunha yesterday in a difficult match for Wolves.

The £60,000-a-week Brazilian is still not playing the position he is most comfortable, but he is doing a great job and is actually chipping in with a few goals now.

Four in the league isn’t too bad a return, although he was squandered some really good chances this season. But fans know that he is not very prolific

He is definitely having a solid season though, and appears to have really found his feet at Molineux since his move to the club in January. You can tell he very much enjoys being a Wolves player, and of course recently he did suggest that he wanted to be at the club for a long time.
