Wolves progressed in the Carabao Cup after beating Burnley 2-0 at Molineux, seeing several rarely-seen players shine.
Gary O’Neil will be relieved to have seen a higher level of performance compared to Wolves’ 6-2 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.
The comfortable victory over Burnley was not only a chance for redemption, but a chance for the squad’s fringe players to prove a point, which they did.
Daniel Podence, Pedro Lima, Chiquinho and Goncalo Guedes impressed on the night, as Guedes netted a match-winning brace to alert O’Neil.

Gary O’Neil issues update on Daniel Podence and Goncalo Guedes’ future at Wolves
Considering that there are less than two days of the summer transfer window remaining, some might have been surprised to see Podence and Guedes in action on Wednesday night.
The pair returned from loan spells away from Molineux and have since been expected to leave Wolves before the 2024/25 campaign really gets underway.
The two forwards were top performers on the night against Burnley, giving O’Neil further incentive to provide an update on their futures.
As relayed by journalist Nathan Judah, O’Neil admitted in a shock revelation that he expects both Podence and Guedes to stay this summer.
“The transfer window hasn’t gone quite as we’d have liked so far, but Daniel [Podence], Guedes, Chiquinho have been great.
“I expect Guedes & Podence to be here after the window.”
O’Neil’s admission would have shocked many, with Podence being linked with a transfer only this week.
Daniel Podence and Goncalo Guedes have something to offer
If the duo’s performances against Burnley was anything to go by, then Wolves are smart to keep the forward’s in their grasp for the at least the first half of the season.
Guedes netted his brace expertly, showing inspired movement to win his side the game.
Podence was a lot for the Championship side to handle as he occupied the number 10 role, assisting Guedes’ second of the night as well as pulling off an exceptional five key passes, via Sofascore.
Both of the attackers showed shades of quality that is hard to come by in O’Neil’s squad, reinforcing why the manager must try and utilise them in preparation for the challenges ahead.
