Gary O’Neil issues injury update before Newcastle vs Wolves as first-teamer is confirmed fit

Gary O’Neil has updated fans on Wolves’ latest injury news ahead of their trip to Newcastle with first-teamer confirmed fit.

Wolves travel up north on Saturday in a crucial tie at the top of the table. 10th-place Newcastle hosts Wolves as both sides look to secure European football next season.

O’Neil’s side has been on fine form and qualified for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over Brighton at Molineux

However, this game also cost Wolves on the pitch. Multiple players picked up injuries including Hwang Hee-Chan and Joao Gomes.

Ahead of Saturday’s tie, O’Neil confirmed that one player will be fine for the game as they look to take all three points.

Wolves fans haven’t been able to see much of their South Korean striker in 2024. After a sensational first half of the season which saw him net 11 goals, Hwang has been away from the first team.

He first went off with South Korea for the Asian Cup which kept him out of all of January’s games. Then, upon returning, an injury prevented him from playing against Brentford in the Premier League.

Now, Hwang is set to be out of action yet again after picking up a hamstring injury against Brighton in the FA Cup.

O’Neil confirmed that he will definitely miss the Newcastle fixture in his press conference.

Journalist Liam Keen reported that he said: “He won’t make the weekend and we’ll then have more assessments on him. No timeframe, we’ll know more after the weekend. Hopefully not too long.”

Another player who has been great for Wolves this season is Joao Gomes. The Brazilian netted twice past Spurs in February in a 2-1 win

His performances throughout the last month have even seen him nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month

However, like Hwang, he also picked up an injury against Brighton and was forced off the pitch in added time.

O’Neil confirmed that he has recovered for the Newcastle fixture and should be fit to play at St. James’ Park.

Cunha is another player that has seen his season come to a halt. The attacker was on great form in 2024 and netted a hat-trick past Chelsea in a 4-2 win.

However, against Brentford, he was forced off with an injury which has kept him out the last three games.

O’Neil recently said the situation seems ‘optimistic’ with the injury not as bad as first feared. However, Cunha will not be back for the tie against Newcastle.
