Gary O’Neil gives “optimistic” Matheus Cunha injury update as vital player returns for Spurs vs Wolves

Gary O’Neil has updated fans on the injury front ahead of Spurs vs Wolves with one vital player returning for the tie.

Wolves return to action on Saturday aiming to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Brentford last weekend at Molineux.

O’Neil’s side now travel back to London to take on Spurs. Wolves actually got the better of Tottenham the last time the two sides met. Two stoppage-time goals from Pablo Sarabia and Mario Lemina was Wolves beat Spurs 2-1

Now, the visitors go into the game on an inconsistent patch of form. A fantastic 4-2 victory over Chelsea is sandwiched between two defeats at Molineux.

This followed by Cunha’s injury against Brentford has put Wolves in a difficult situation going into the next game. However, O’Neil was able to deliver some positive news in his press conference as he confirmed Hwang Hee-Chan was returning for Spurs.

Hwang has now been away from the Wolves squad for well over a month. His last appearance came back in 2023 in a 3-0 victory over Everton.

Since then, the South Korean international went away on international duty to compete in the Asian Cup. After his country’s exit to Jordan in the semi-finals, he was due to return against Brentford. However, a calf issue prevented his comeback.

Now, O’Neil was able to offer some positive news about the forward ahead of their trip to London.

In his press conference, he said: “Channy is completely fine. His calf was sore last week but not feeling it any more. Unless I get any surprises after this press conference, Channy will be fine for tomorrow.”

Wolves received a massive blow earlier this week when it was confirmed that Cunha was forced off against Brentford with a hamstring injury

The Brazilian was in his best form so far since taking on the old gold colours last year. His hat-trick against Chelsea was the pinnacle of this, as he became the first Wolves player since Diogo Jota to net three times in a single game.

In the press conference, O’Neil was able to offer a positive update for the Brazilian with Cunha remaining “optimistic” about his return.

O’Neil added: “Some muscle damage. He’s really optimistic and feels good, he’s keen to get back as soon as he can. We haven’t set any timelines.

“He’s upbeat about it. Muscle damage is never positive and it will need time to repair, but how he’s feeling doesn’t reflect the scan, which is positive. He’s desperate to come back and help the team.”
