Gary O’Neil gets big boost ahead of Brentford clash as Wolves player resumes training

Wolves take on Brentford this weekend and it’s a big chance to get points on the board.

Wanderers fell to another defeat last weekend against Liverpool and currently, the team sit bottom of the Premier League.

It has been a difficult start, as most expected it to be given the fixtures.

But there is an opportunity for three points this weekend with Brentford Wolves‘ opponents at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Brentford are a good, solid Premier League side. But Bees manager Thomas Frank has a string of injuries at the moment, making this a golden chance to get a first win on the board.

Key to winning the game will be a good defensive display, and Gary O’Neil looks like he’ll be able to count on Craig Dawson for the game.

Last weekend, Dawson did not make Wolves’ matchday squad after being struck down by illness.

O’Neil had said that there had been a virus in the camp ahead of the game with Liverpool.

Dawson played no part against the Reds, meaning Santi Bueno got his first Premier League start of the season. He played alongside Toti Gomes at the back, but was withdrawn in the second-half after picking up an injury.

Wolves lost 2-1 and who knows what might have been had Dawson been able to play.

But it looks as though the veteran will be available for this weekend’s game with Brentford, in what will be a big relief for O’Neil.

Wolves released new training photos this morning, and Dawson can be seen training as normal with the rest of his teammates at Compton Park.

Major boost for O’Neil

It is the sight every Wolves fan wanted to see, leading up to this weekend’s huge game with Brentford.

Dawson is Wolves’ most experienced centre-back and someone who has had a big impact on the backline since his arrival at the club in January 2023.

Wanderers have improved defensively since he came back into the side, and it is great news for O’Neil that he looks to have recovered from his illness.

Having the £45,000-a-week man fit and available in the coming weeks will be so important for Wolves, who are down to the bare bones already.

After the loss of Yerson Mosquera, it is now paramount that Dawson is wrapped in bubble wrap. Because losing him for an extended period would be catastrophic.
