Gary O’Neil made an appearance on talkSPORT this morning – and made an admission about the club’s financial position that will relieve many supporters.
O’Neil has enjoyed a terrific start to life at Molineux, having defied the odds to get Wolves up into 11th place in the Premier League table after 25 games.
Many pundits tipped Wolves to either struggle or go down this season, after Julen Lopetegui walked out just days before the new campaign.
Wanderers also had to sell a lot of top players in the summer to balance the books.
The selling of key players just makes what O’Neil has done all the more impressive.
Thankfully, O’Neil has made a suggestion this morning that Wolves have now emerged into much calmer waters regarding their finances…
Gary O’Neil says Wolves do not have to sell their best players this summer

This morning, O’Neil was asked about possible interest in his players given the amazing work he has done with so many of them.
There has already been plenty of speculation about who could leave this summer, with Pedro Neto the player most people expect will depart, amid interest from some big clubs.
But O’Neil has at least moved to suggest that, while Wolves will consider big offers, the club will not be under any financial pressure to sell.
He told Natalie Sawyer and Dean Saunders: “The good news is, on the player front is that we sold some last summer and we didn’t sign many. We didn’t spend anything in January so, financially we’re in a place where we don’t need to lose our best players, we don’t need to lose any players, so that puts us in a better place than we were last summer, initially.
“So we can make our own decisions on what’s best for the club, rather than what might need to be done. So no one will be leaving if it doesn’t suit us. Obviously, if top, top clubs come calling for players and the price is right and we think it’s better for Wolves, then that will always be a consideration.”
Encouraging news for Wolves fans, although Neto could still leave
O’Neil’s remarks this morning about Wolves’ financial position were certainly encouraging.
It has been a tricky period for the club having overspent in recent seasons, and there was legitimate concern last summer as Wanderers endeavoured to balance the books by selling key stars.
It does now sound as though Wolves are in a good place and that there won’t be any repeats of last summer this time around.
That said, it is probably still more likely than not that Pedro Neto – who has long been wanted by Arsenal – will be sold.
The ‘dangerous’ Portuguese winger is going to have many clubs after him this summer and Fosun – who want Wolves to be self-sustaining – will likely not want to turn down massive money.
