Gary O’Neil claims Wolves ace ‘shouldn’t have played’ on Saturday

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil has admitted that he is now ‘worried’ about the depth of his squad ahead of the January transfer window.

Wolves headed down to the South Coast on Saturday afternoon, taking on Gary O’Neil’s former club Bournemouth.

The Cherries axed O’Neil in favour of Andoni Iraola at the end of last season but ended up on the losing side against Wolves.

Bournemouth went ahead through Dominic Solanke, only for Matheus Cunha to level it up for Wolves.

Wolves then took advantage of Lewis Cook’s sending off, eventually finding a late winner through substitute Sasa Kalajdzic.

Gary O’Neil comments on Matt Doherty situation

Wolves are now eight points clear of Bournemouth, something O’Neil will be happy about – even if he plays it down in the media.

One thing O’Neil isn’t happy about is his squad depth at Wolves.

O’Neil told The Mirror’s Ryan Taylor that he is a ‘bit worried’ about the squad due to a lack of options.

O’Neil highlighted that Matt Doherty shouldn’t have even been playing against Bournemouth having strained his groin in training on Friday.

Doherty ended up battling through 90 minutes against Bournemouth but O’Neil clearly wants new faces in January to beef up his squad.

“I’m a bit worried about squad depth. Matt Doherty shouldn’t have played today, he strained his groin yesterday in training. We’ll look to address a couple of areas in January,” said O’Neil.

Wolves still in transition period

O’Neil did have options on the bench and could have used Jonny in place of the hurt Doherty.

Others are still settling in, such as Santiago Bueno, whilst youngsters Joe Hodge and Nathan Fraser were also on the bench.

Fabio Silva is yet to really get going this season and Pablo Sarabia is certainly a Julen Lopetegui man.

Wolves are still adjusting to a new era having offloaded the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Adama Traore over the summer.

It may take a couple of transfer windows for this to become O’Neil’s squad – starting with January.
