Barcelona may have lost Lionel Messi, but that didn’t prevent them from comfortably winning their opening game in La Liga at the weekend. And they did so with the help of a player heavily linked with Wolves in recent weeks.
The giants ran out 4-2 winners over Real Sociedad, in what was a very good result for Ronald Koeman’s men.
Sociedad had a very good season last term, finishing fifth in the table.
The three points came as a result of goals from Gerard Pique, Sergio Roberto, and a brace from Martin Braithwaite.
The Denmark international struck on the stroke of half-time, ghosting in at the back post to powerfully head in a cross.
In the second-half he was on hand to smash home a loose ball to put clear daylight between the sides.
Roberto then scored, and there was a late rally from Sociedad, but there was no chance to mount a serious comeback.
During the game, Match of the Day host of regular viewer of Barcelona matches Lineker jokingly wrote: “Barça are 3 up and Braithwaite is the new Messi.”
Wolves target Braithwaite in good form
Braithwaite’s brace follows his goal against Juventus in the recent Joan Gamper Trophy.
He also scored in the pre-season friendly against Salzburg.
His goalscoring streak follows a pretty decent showing at Euro 2020 with Denmark.
Perhaps he would actually make for a decent addition for Wolves depending on the price. It was claimed weeks ago that he could be available for just £13 million.
Patrick Cutrone has joined Empoli on loan, and if Rafa Mir goes then there really would be need for a new attacker.
