Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards left completely red-faced by Wolves

Wolves moved into the top half of the Premier League table yesterday – and Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Micah Richards were all left red-faced on the latest Rest Is Football podcast.

Wanderers enjoyed their best performance and result of the season on Sunday, beating Chelsea 4-2 at Stamford Bridge.

It was the first time Wolves had won away at the Blues since 1979, with Matheus Cunha grabbing a hat-trick for the visitors.

Cunha was superb, as was Pedro Neto, and the three points lifted Wolves into the top half of the table for the first time this season.

Gary O’Neil is doing a remarkable job, and after the game, he spoke about how he wants to prove wrong all the pundits who tipped Wolves to go down. He’s certainly doing that, and three of the game’s highest-profile pundits were left very sheepish after Wolves moved up to 10th place…

Wolves’ win over Chelsea was briefly discussed on the latest Rest Is Football podcast.

Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards were three people who thought Wolves would struggle or even go down this season, given all the player sales and Julen Lopetegui’s departure.

Initially, Lineker and Shearer mocked Richards, with the former Manchester City defender insisting he had predicted Wolves to finish ‘quite high up’. Lineker said: “I have the evidence in front of me. Micah Richards said that Wolves would be in a relegation battle. (That) they will stay in the league, but will struggle.”

A laughing Richards joked: “I think I did a column with the BBC, I think I had them top 12!”

Lineker then said: “Alan, you had Wolves in a relegation battle!

Shearer replied: Yeah, I didn’t see it happening, what they’re doing, I was wrong.”

Lineker then admitted: “I’m not going to say what I said… I had them bottom three! Well done Gary ‘Neil, well done Wolverhampton Wanderers, it’s lovely to be proven wrong, again!”

Wolves proving many people wrong

Lineker, Shearer and Richards are certainly not the only pundits who thought Wolves would struggle this season.

To be fair, what Gary O’Neil and the team are doing at the moment is even surprising a lot of Wolves fans.

There were some who had complete faith in him to deliver when he was appointed as Lopetegui’s successor, but even the biggest optimists could not have foreseen this.

It has truly been a fantastic season so far and should O’Neil actually get Wolves to finish in the top 10 then he has to be in with a chance of being named Manager of the Season.
