Gary Lineker admits he liked ‘dangerous’ Wolves star before he arrived at Molineux

Gary Lineker has been speaking about Wolves star Matheus Cunha, and praised the improvements he has made from his time at Atletico Madrid.

Cunha grabbed headlines at the weekend by scoring a hat-trick in a 4-2 win for Wolves over Chelsea.

The Brazilian scored his first treble in Wolves colours and helped to rip Chelsea apart at Stamford Bridge alongside Pedro Neto.

Cunha got a slice of luck on his first goal with a deflection, but he then swept home his second from Pedro Neto’s cross, before completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

Cunha is now up to 11 goals for the season across all competitions, with nine of those coming in the Premier League – and Lineker has enjoyed seeing him thrive after watching him at Atletico…

Lineker brought up Wolves on the latest Rest Is Football podcast, and spoke a bit about Wolves’ man of the moment Cunha.

He has been one of the revelations of the season at Wolves, with Gary O’Neil turning him into a regular goalscorer.

Last term, after joining from Atletico Madrid, Cunha scored just two goals under Julen Lopetegui, and there were serious questions about his end product.

This was an issue for him in Spain too, according to Lineker, who praised the Wolves man for his recent improvements.

He said: “It’s funny, I’ve always liked Cunha. I watched him quite a lot at Atletico Madrid. The one thing he always lacked in his game – he was quick dangerous and quite creative – but he just didn’t score enough goals.

“All of a sudden he seems to be finding the net and a hat-trick to boot (against Chelsea).”

Cunha has come a long way

It is interesting to hear this from Lineker, who does keep an eye on Spanish football having played himself in Spain with Barcelona, of course.

Clearly, before arriving at Wolves, £60,000-a-week star Cunha was not a regular goalscorer and so, he and Gary O’Neil both deserve tremendous credit for the work they have done getting him to score more goals.

Many people doubted Cunha after his first half-season at the club, with the star missing a lot of chances.

But he’s being used much more effectively now and has got his eye in.
