Former Wolves striker target has just notched his 27th goal of the season

While Wolves have actually been decent in the final third this season, one of the club’s previous transfer targets Viktor Gyokeres has certainly been enjoying himself since moving to Sporting CP.

Wanderers have been in the market for a new centre-forward for some time now, with Gary O’Neil looking to get Matheus Cunha into more of a free role.

He tried to sign one last month, with Armando Broja the main target in the end.

But Wolves did also look at strikers last summer, although in the end, the club’s financial situation prevented the club from doing any major business.

But Gyokeres was reportedly looked at by Wolves, and he’s certainly looking like a player Wolves missed out on…

Gyokeres was apparently looked at by Wolves last summer, with one report claiming Wanderers made him a priority target at one point.

Gyokeres had really impressed at Coventry City the season before, and Wanderers were ready to swoop, with Molineux legend Dave Edward throwing his backing behind a move at the time of the link – he reckoned he was a bit like Raul Jimenez due to his dynamism.

But in the end, Sporting signed the Sweden international, who said at the time of his unveiling that he did have other options, but ultimately signed because the Portuguese giants were the club showing the most interest in him.

It’s unclear if an official bid ever actually went in for Gyokeres, but interest from Wolves was reported very frequently.

Gyokeres has very much been Sporting’s gain. At the weekend, he scored his 27th goal of the season across all competitions, notching against Joao Moutinho’s SC Braga in a 5-0 win.

In addition to his 27 goals, Gyokeres has also laid on a very impressive 11 assists.

Wolves have done well this season, but Gyokeres looks a transfer miss

Wolves have largely been pretty good in attack this season, with Gary O’Neil finding a way to get the team to become much more free-scoring than last season.

The club have already scored more goals in the league than the whole of last season.

But Wolves have still needed a proper number nine – and Gyokeres definitely looks a serious player.

Granted, there are leagues of a higher standard than the Portuguese top-flight, but 38 goal contributions is still extremely impressive, and shows that he’s got a solid all-round game.

Perhaps Wolves were never really in a good enough position financially to sign Gyokeres over Sporting, which would be a great shame considering what he’s doing now.
