Former Wolves player suggests VAR made a big error during Newcastle United loss

Wolves have had their fair share of controversy involving VAR, but they might have got away with one against Newcastle United.

Recently, a panel found VAR guilty of making a mistake against Wolves vs Everton, and that could have resulted in the Molineux side picking up a point.

However, Vitor Pereira’s side have yet to pick up any points, and the loss to Newcastle made it four defeats from four.

Nick Woltemade’s first-half header was all that could separate the sides, as the Toon picked up all three points.

There was also another key moment in the first half when Yerson Mosquera collided with Harvey Barnes, resulting in a former Wolves player suggesting a red card should have been shown.

Gary Breen says Yerson Mosquera was ‘lucky’ to not get sent off

Gary Breen played for the Old Gold between 2006 and 2008, and was on punditry duty for Premier Sports, a TV channel in the Republic of Ireland, for their game against Newcastle.

The former defender was asked about the collision between Mosquera and Barnes, and said the Colombian was ‘lucky’ in the decision.

Breen said, “If the decision was made for a red card, I wouldn’t really have known where to argue with it. Mosquera reads the bounce of the ball wrong and panics a little bit, and tries to move Barnes out of the way, but when you slow it down, his forearm is too high and it goes into his chin.”

“Now if you look at that in isolation, it does give VAR a decision to make. They relayed it back to the ref and said we are not going to change it, but he is lucky” he continues.

The former Wolves man’s sentiment was not shared by everyone, as his co-pundit Chris Hughton had a different opinion.

Chris Hughton did not agree with Gary Breen on Mosquera red card decision

Chris Hughton did not agree that there was enough for a red card. The former Irish international felt the intent was not there.

Hughton said, ‘For me as a defender, I will say no, there is not enough intent to overturn it.’

If Mosquera had been sent off, it would have made the match even harder for the Old Gold, and the score could have been more than 1-0.

Wolves’ performance was better than previous weeks, but they still came away with zero points, and that will be a disappointment for Pereira.

Next up is Leeds at home, and that will be a must-win for the club, or else they could find themselves in major trouble this season.
