Former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil enters frame for Premier League job

Wolves are onto their second manager since Gary O’Neil’s sacking at Molineux.

Gary O’Neil was appointed as the new head coach of Wolves back in August of 2023 on a three-year deal after a successful stint at AFC Bournemouth.

However, O’Neil was offered a rather strange new deal by Fosun a year later in 2024, but lasted just four months after that.

The departure of the 41-year-old came just three days after Jeff Shi said the club were “united” behind O’Neil after a 2-1 defeat at West Ham.

At least Wolves had wins during the 2024/2025 season, but it was only two of them by December time, which left the Old Gold in 19th position.

Gary O’Neil makes a promise for his next managerial job… where did it all go wrong at Wolves?🤔

“And definitely the next time I get in, Jamie, we’ll do this (set-pieces) every day. We’ll find time to do this every single day on the training pitch because it’s playing such a big part on it and the detail of it and how much you have to do on it.”

Leeds United eye Gary O’Neil for a return to the Premier League

Gary O’Neil was shockingly in the running to replace Vitor Pereira at Wolves.

However, that didn’t last long as Wolves fans hit back online, which mysteriously saw Gary O’Neil walk away from advanced talks to return to Molineux.

Interestingly, it appears as if his opportunity in the Premier League may be around the corner amid growing pressure on Daniel Farke at Leeds United.

According to TalkSPORT, O’Neil has entered the frame for the Leeds United job alongside Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers.

Gary O’Neil has already given his view on Rob Edwards

Gary O’Neil refused to comment too much on Rob Edwards being appointed as Wolves manager, but he did have some slight reservations over the squad.

Was Vitor Pereira at fault or is this Wolves squad just not good enough?😬

“They backed Vitor in the summer and so far this new team has not been able to put enough results on the board, and they’re in a transition period from a group that had more physicality but not as technical. But Rob has already been in a great job at Middlesbrough, so he must have seen something in this.”

This isn’t the only reservation that has been raised about the squad this season, as Wolves’ summer transfer business has come under a lot of scrutiny.

Jhon Arias has been the biggest disappointment after his exploits at the Club World Cup in the summer.

The loss of Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nour is what is hurting Wolves the most, as they just lack any kind of clinical touch and creativity in the final third.
