Former Wolves icon Richard Stearman now without coaching role after shake-up at Swansea City

Former Wolves defender Richard Stearman is fairly new to the coaching side of football, and his first major role came with Swansea City this year – but that has now come to an end.

Stearman only announced his retirement from football in 2024, and it was not long until he found his way back into the game.

He immediately stayed on as Solihull Moors’ first-team coach in the National League.

And then a few months later, Stearman joined Swansea City in the Championship.

However, after this latest announcement, he finds himself looking for work once again.

Richard Stearman exits Swansea after working as assistant coach

Swansea City have now announced Vitor Matos as their new manager, and alongside their appointment, it means that some of the previous staff are leaving the club.

One of those is former Wolves player Richard Stearman, who was working at the club as the assistant head coach.

In an official statement, Swansea have said, “Darren O’Dea and Richard Stearman have left the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them and their families well for the future.”

Stearman will be well remembered by many Old Gold supporters, seeing as he played for the club for eight years across a permanent spell and a loan move.

This includes 254 appearances for Wolves and seven goals scored.

The former defender joined Swansea in March 2025, until the end of the season, but would ultimately stay on past then.

Is there room for Richard Stearman at Wolves?

Rob Edwards is still building his backroom staff at Wolves, with the arrival of Paul Trollope being recent.

However, Edwards did say there were more additions to be made over the coming weeks as he looks to claw the Old Gold out of the relegation zone.

In theory, there is space for Stearman to join Edwards as a returning player to work at the club; however, he is still inexperienced as a coach.

The former Swansea assistant only started coaching in 2024, and with relegation looming and then a potential fight for promotion next season ahead, Wolves may need better-equipped coaches.
