Former referee shares Joao Gomes red card verdict – he says Vitor Pereira’s reaction is ‘everything’

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes was sent off during the Old Gold’s Premier League defeat to Arsenal.

Despite suffering their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat, Wolves caused Arsenal real problems at Molineux.

The Old Gold were handed a chance at a result as Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off just before the interval however, Gomes rained on Wolves’ parade.

Vitor Pereira was unimpressed by Gomes’ red card, suggesting that the Brazilian cost Wolves the game by being unable to control his emotions.

Dermot Gallagher shares Joao Gomes red card verdict

Unlike Arsenal defender Lewis-Skelly, Gomes received two yellow cards that led to his dismissal.

Given the uproar that came from Lewis-Skelly’s sending-off, there were some questions to be asked over why Gomes’ second yellow card was not a straight red.

The nature of the two fouls was similar however, Gomes escaped an immediate dismissal, something that former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher analysed.

“It’s certainly a second yellow card,” Gallagher said on Sky Sports Ref Watch

“I didn’t have to tell you that, his manager told him that, his manager tells you everything,” the former official added, commenting on Pereira’s reaction to Gomes’ early walk.

“He’s almost saying ‘Why have you done this? It’s 11 against ten, still 0-0, we’ve got a chance’. He stands on his foot doesn’t he? Doesn’t go down his shin, stands on his foot. Second yellow card. Manager is the first to agree.”

Gallagher explained why Gomes escaped the same punishment as Lewis-Skelly, also bringing attention to the needless actions of the Brazilian.

While Pereira expressed his dissatisfaction at how his player carried himself on a yellow card, Nelson Semedo showed full support for Gomes, who some believe is responsible for the defeat.

Gomes must learn from Arsenal error

Gomes doesn’t need to be kicked while he’s down, as it’s clear that the midfielder regretted his actions, as he looked dejected leaving the pitch at Molineux.

Danny Murphy blasted Gomes’ foul against Arsenal, saying that the midfielder let his teammates down as the Gunners took the lead just moments later.

During his suspension, the 2023 arrival must think carefully about how he conducts himself in future, with his lack of discipline a real fault in his game.
