Forgotten £27.5m player now spotted in Wolves training gear at Compton despite uncertain future

A player who has rarely been seen at Wolves over the last 18 months or so has now shared a picture of himself in the gym back at Compton.

Wolves have just wrapped up a week of training out in Marbella, and played a training game against Como 1907 on Monday night.

It has been an intense period, with the blistering heat helping to ensure that the players have been working extremely hard.

Gary O’Neil took 29 players to the camp.

The manager left a couple of big names behind, potentially so that they can get to work on facilitating their exits from the club. Fabio Silva was one of those players.

Goncalo Guedes also didn’t go to Marbella, but the winger has been back at Compton in recent days.

Guedes spent last season on loan at Benfica initially, and then he went to Villarreal.

He wasn’t getting regular minutes with the Portuguese giants, so Wolves facilitated a fresh move for him in January.

He did play more regularly at Villarreal, making 19 appearances. He scored three goals and made three assists.

There has been little word about whether Villarreal would like to sign the player permanently so far.

But seemingly Wolves would be more than happy to sell the player, otherwise he would have been out in Marbella with the other players.

But Guedes has returned to Compton in recent days.

Yesterday, he shared a picture of himself in the gym at Wolves’ training ground, sporting the club’s new training kit.

Guedes’ last appearance in a Wolves’ shirt came back in January 2023, in a third-round FA Cup match against Liverpool at Anfield. This was the game when Toti Gomes saw a goal controversially chalked off, after cameras could not determine whether Matheus Nunes was onside or not.

Guedes will surely leave

So Guedes has been getting himself in shape ahead of the 2024/25 season, but it’s difficult to see how he remains at the club.

The winger had a torrid time at Molineux shortly after making his £27.5 million move from Valencia in the summer of 2022, with fans struggling to warm to him from the off.

He’s had spells with Benfica and Villarreal and hasn’t really pulled up any trees, which will have been a frustration for Wolves who are likely wanting to recoup as much of their initial investment as possible.

Earlier this summer, it was reported that he was one of three players to be transfer-listed by the club, the others being Daniel Podence and Sasa Kalajdzic.

It is hard to see how Guedes sticks around, given there have been zero reports about O’Neil wanting him, or indeed him wanting to stay.

But who knows. Perhaps a chat with O’Neil will completely change the picture. It will be very interesting to see if he accompanies the squad on the upcoming trip to the US.
