Forget Matheus Cunha, Dave Edwards thinks another Wolves star gets into ‘any Premier League team’

Wolves squad is littered with quality stars and at the centrepiece of their attack is Brazilian superstar Matheus Cunha.

Before Cunha was banned for two matches, missing the defeat to Nottingham Forest and the win over Bristol City, the 25-year-old was matching some of the Premier League’s greatest forwards.

A return of 10 goals and four assists in the top flight highlighted his talent in the final third, with Arsenal becoming huge admirers of Cunha as a result.

Wolves have been in contract talks with Cunha, as they aim to keep him beyond the January transfer window, and good news emerged last week.

Cunha reportedly verbally agreed a new Wolves deal, rumoured to be a fresh four-year contract, leaving supporters delighted.

However, it isn’t just the Brazilian who has stolen the limelight this term, as another of Vitor Pereira’s stars is capable of reaching the highest level.

Dave Edwards thinks Joao Gomes gets into ‘any Premier League team’

Dave Edwards thinks it isn’t just Cunha who gets into every Premier League team, claiming any side in the division would also take midfielder Joao Gomes.

The combative Brazilian was influential during Wolves’ 2-1 win against Bristol City, resulting in huge praise from the former Wanderers defender.

“The two stand-out players for Wolves, due to the way they controlled the game, was the Brazilian pair in midfield in Andre and Joao Gomes,” Edwards wrote in his E&S column.

“There’s not enough superlatives for Joao Gomes. I genuinely think that any team in the Premier League would take him, he’s such a fantastic footballer.

“The way he wins the ball back, I’ve waxed lyrical about that on numerous occasions.

“He’s becoming a lot better on the ball as well. He can receive the ball in tight areas and he manipulates it.

“He’s never going to be a player who cuts open defences with his passes, but the way he kept it moving, him and Andre had a real stability about them.”

How Joao Gomes can reach even greater heights

Gomes has been linked with huge clubs recently, as his performances for Wolves are being noticed by some huge clubs.

The 23-year-old is known for being a combative presence in the middle of the mark but remarkably, Gomes didn’t make a single foul against Bristol City, instead controlling the game alongside Andre.

As highlighted by Edwards, the Brazilian duo were influential to their side securing a victory at Ashton Gate, and this will have pleased Pereira.

Joao Gomes Premier League stats 2024/25
2 goals
1 assist
0 big chances created
0.6 key passes per game
3.2 tackles per game
5.2 balls recovered per game

However, as detailed in the above table, Gomes can take his game to the next level by becoming more of a force in the final third.

The former Flamengo talent has only been involved in just three goals this term while creating zero big chances, with the midfielder needing to improve his output.

Gary O’Neil previously urged Gomes to improve his quality in the opposition half, and this is how he adds extra value to his skyrocketing price tag.
