Fernando Marcal has been back in Wolves training this week, after the defender missed last weekend’s 3-1 win over Southampton.
The Brazilian was unavailable for Saturday’s Premier League clash at Molineux. Rayan Ait-Nouri featured at left wing-back, and Toti Gomes made his debut at left centre-back.
Marcal had started at left centre-back against Sheffield United in the FA Cup third round clash a couple of weeks ago.
But he only lasted the first-half before being replaced at half-time.
Bruno Lage said after that game that the move was part precautionary, part wanting to see Dendoncker in defence.
It is likely Marcal would have started against Southampton had been available.
After the game, Lage said that keeping Max Kilman on the right was a factor in his decision to go with the left-footed Gomes on the left.
It seems Marcal could be back in contention to play against Brentford this weekend.
The 32-year-old has been back in training this week, with none other than Jose Sa taking photos for the official website.
That is a boost for Lage, who needs as many options fit and available as possible.
Whether Marcal returns to the starting XI straight away though remains to be seen.
Gomes did nothing to warrant losing his starting berth. And Ait-Nouri was also outstanding once again at left wing-back against Southampton.
Fernando Marcal to see fewer minutes for Wolves in second half of 2021/22?
Thankfully whatever prompted Marcal to come off against Sheffield United doesn’t seem too much of an issue.
But one wonders whether Marcal might be seeing fewer minutes for Wolves in the second half of the season.
Ait-Nouri seems to be impressing whenever he takes to the field. And Jonny Castro Otto is back in training now and should return to match action next month.
Romain Saiss will come back from AFCON at some point in the next few weeks.
So it is looking like Marcal could be on the periphery from here on in.
But hopefully he can stay fit, and come in and do a job when required. He’s definitely had a pretty decent second season at Molineux so far.
