Fans have been reacting to the performance of Renato Sanches for Portugal last night, amid transfer links to Wolves.
The midfielder was selected to start by Fernando Santos against Serbia in the nation’s final World Cup qualifier.
In the end, it was a hugely disappointing night for Portugal, who lost 2-1 to finish second in their group.
Serbia are the automatic qualifiers for Qatar, with Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring a late winner.
Portugal will now attempt to qualify for the finals via the play-offs.
The night started off so well, with Sanches actually getting himself on the scoresheets inside two minutes.
He capitalised on some poor play at the back from Serbia, with Bernardo Silva pressing to win the ball back on the edge of the penalty area.
Sanches then fired past Predrag Rajkovic.
Portugal then sat on their lead, and were punished for not really pushing for more.
Sanches has had better outings, but he was one of the better performers last night for a disappointing Portugal.
He won 5/9 duels, and made a couple of successful tackles. He also completed 2/2 dribbles (Sofascore).
His showing came after claims last week that Wolves are planning to make a bid for the Lille star.
Fans praise Sanches after goal against Serbia
There was obviously a lot of shock and disappointment in Portugal as a collective after the game.
But Sanches did come in for praise for his contributions in the game.
He will have much better outings, but he still made an impression on some people:
renato sanches played well tonight despite portugal’s overall performance. he’s such a quality midfielder but the thing that hurts him the most is he’s become more injury prone and lacks consistency when he returns from said injury. when he’s on form tho nobody can stop him lol

Sanches was the only noticeable player out there today. Passes were brutal, the quality all around was so poor in a game they took for granted.

Reneto Sanches is a BALLER

Nope. Sanches was the only one who looked like a geniune threat going forward. Each time he got the ball, he tried to push the team forward. In fact, if both Sanches and Bernado finished the game, Portugal would’ve qualified. Bruno does nothing for Portugal!

If Portugal can take one positive out of their disappointment tonight, its the performance of Renato Sanches. Going forward, he’s got to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.
