Fabrizio Romano makes intriguing Gary O’Neil claim as former Wolves boss set for Strasbourg

Gary O’Neil came close to returning to Wolves recently but is now set to become the new manager of Strasbourg – and top journalist Fabrizio Romano has made an intriguing claim.

O’Neil is all set for a return to management with Strasbourg, after Liam Rosenior was announced as the new Chelsea manager.

Rosenior’s move created a vacancy at Strasbourg, and the French club have acted quickly.

Official confirmation of Gary O’Neil’s appointment is expected soon, and it will be a chance for him to get back into it, after leaving Wolves in December 2024.

O’Neil has been patient since his sacking at Molineux, with several Championship clubs having been linked with him.

But Fabrizio Romano shared some interesting information last night, as O’Neil prepares to return to management.

It was a real shame how things ended for O’Neil at Wolves.

The Englishman did really well in the 2023/24 season, after arriving at Molineux just days before the campaign started following the departure of Julen Lopetegui.

But in his second term, he just couldn’t get the results.

He had to go when he did, and now O’Neil has had a lot of time out to prepare for his next job. And he has carefully considered what that next job will be.

Interestingly, Fabrizio Romano has reported that other clubs were showing interest in O’Neil, writing on X on Wednesday: “Gary O’Neil, signing his contract at RC Strasbourg in the next hours.

O’Neil picked the French project despite being in contention to get job at two Premier League clubs.”

Romano stopped short of naming those Premier League clubs that were showing interest.

A fascinating move for O’Neil after Wolves failure

It may have all fallen apart at Wolves for O’Neil, but clearly he still had a lot of admirers in the English game.

Of course, Wolves looked to reappoint him after sacking Vitor Pereira, only for O’Neil himself to remove himself from the running. Rob Edwards was then appointed.

It was claimed that O’Neil had reservations about the direction Wolves were heading in and the structure.

During his time at Molineux though, O’Neil did show promising signs as a coach and he’ll hope that he can do that again as he embarks on a new adventure in France.

It was a tough environment at Wolves with a lot of pressure.

Perhaps being away from the spotlight will serve him well, and he’ll end up taking a similar path to what Rosenior has.
