Expert thinks Bilal El Khannouss is ‘capable’ Wolves replacement for Matheus Cunha, he wants to be the next De Bruyne

Wolves are already being linked with several new signings before the summer transfer window opens.

After finishing 16th in the Premier League following Vitor Pereira’s rescue act, Wolves want to build on their resurgence under the Portuguese by pushing towards the top half.

Under the Fosun ownership, ambition is normally thwarted, but Pereira has already sent a warning to the Wolves owners, urging them to back him in the transfer market.

With Matheus Cunha joining Manchester United, the biggest priority is replacing his incredible output, including 15 Premier League goals in 2023/24.

Wolves have been linked to Harvey Elliott, and Yuri Alberto is on Pereira’s radar, but the most intriguing of their targets is arguably Bilal El Khannouss.

Following Leicester City’s relegation from the Premier League, Wolves have joined Arsenal in the race for El Khannouss, who dazzled on his debut campaign in the top-flight.

To gain further insight into what the Moroccan playmaker would bring to Wolverhampton, Molineux News spoke to Leicester expert and senior journalist, Callum Boyle.

What are Bilal El Khannouss’ greatest strengths?

“El Khannouss is technically very gifted. His close control dribbling is exceptional to watch, especially with the way he jinks past players. He’s also capable of picking out a pass, in particular a defence-splitting pass that will no doubt be good news to Jorgen Strand Larsen.”

Where can Bilal El Khannouss improve?

“Physicality is his biggest thing he must work on. He’s still young and a year in a struggling Premier League club would’ve done no harm in that sense, but adding a bit more grit wouldn’t go amiss. For all his talents too, he’s not a prolific goal scorer so getting those numbers up is something to work on too.”

Can Bilal El Khannouss replace Matheus Cunha?

“He’s more than capable of replacing Cunha. I think Wolves fans would need to be patient as it’s not easy to replace the goals scored by their talisman from last season, but he will be more of a team player and I’d expect him to start in a number 10, wide attacking role.”

Who is Bilal El Khannouss most comparable to in world football?

Pep Guardiola is a huge fan of El Khannouss and I can sort of see elements of Kevin De Bruyne in his game. He doesn’t have the numbers like De Bruyne does but is capable of doing that, can deliver a wicked set piece and likes to control games from the midfield.

“Like De Bruyne, he’s a product of the Genk academy, and he has even revealed that he tries to model his game on the Manchester City legend.”
