Mateus Mane is at the centre of an international tug of war, with both England and Portugal eager to secure the allegiance of the Wolves gem.

Mateus Mane, who was born in Barreiro, Portugal, and moved to England at the tender age of eight, has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough at Wolves this season.

His emergence has been one of the few positives in what has otherwise been a dismal campaign for the club.

Both nations are set to ramp up their efforts to win over Mane, who has shown serious potential having only been on the scene for a matter of months.

It’s been reported by BBC Sport that Portugal manager, Roberto Martinez has been particularly proactive in his pursuit of Mane. Apparently, he sees the young forward as a key asset for Portugal’s future.

The allure of representing his birth nation may be strong for Mane, especially with the backing of influential figures like Martinez and the federation’s president, Pedro Proenca.

Their concerted efforts to secure Mane’s services underline the high regard in which he’s held.

On the other side of the fence, England are equally determined to keep Mane within their ranks.

Mane, of course, has already represented England’s U18s, and is familiar with the setup and has the opportunity to progress further.

The prospect of playing for England, the country where he’s spent most of his formative years, at senior level may well hold its own strong appeal.

International decision not the only big call for Mane

It could be a tough choice for Mane regarding who to represent at international level.

And it’s not the only big decision he’ll soon have to make.

Obviously, Mane has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, with a number of clubs set to try and sign him this summer.

It could be that he has a number of offers this summer. But he could yet stay at Wolves, as he seeks to further his development in the Championship
