Embarrassment for Matheus Cunha and Man United – and Wolves fans just can’t resist

It is safe to say that Matheus Cunha was not the most popular figure at Wolves in his final months at the club.

The Brazilian signed a new contract at Molineux on February 1, putting an end to the transfer speculation that was surrounding him at the time.

With Wolves struggling, there was talk that Matheus Cunha could leave mid-season.

He stayed put, but the following months were turbulent to say the least.

Despite that new contract, it was felt by most that he would move on in the summer. Sure enough, that came to pass, with Manchester United signing him up for £62.5 million.

For many, it was actually a relief when he left, as the noise around him had become exhausting.

Wolves have lost a gamechanger, but at the same time, the team showed last season that they can win without him.

Cunha’s decision to go to United raised eyebrows.

And after what happened last night in the Carabao Cup, some Wolves fans just couldn’t resist reacting.

United took on Grimsby Town last night, and many felt there was potential for a giant-killing.

Grimsby took a 2-0 lead in extremely wet conditions, and had looked on course to win in normal time.

But United got it back to 2-2 to take the contest to a penalty shootout.

In the end, Grimsby came through, winning 12-11 – and there was embarrassment for Cunha, after he missed the chance to send United through with their fifth spot-kick.

It will have come as no surprise to Wolves fans to see him take the fifth and potentially soak up the glory had he scored.

But he missed, United are out, and Wolves fans could not resist poking fun on social media.

@ChrisGolf15: “Fulfilling his dreams, or nightmares?”

@HoyeRob: “Grass isn’t greener is it pal 😆”

@j_nejman: “Cunha left to get beaten by fourth-tier Grimsby Town in the first round 😂😂😂 #WWFC”

@RogerAnslow: “Cunha left us for nights like this!”

@GreatrexTom: “Pure Cinema. Love that.”

How Cunha irked Wolves fans

So Cunha missing his penalty last night and United crashing out to Grimsby was something of a welcome sight for some Wolves fans.

Cunha gave a controversial interview shortly after signing his new contract at Wolves in which he talked about fighting for titles elsewhere. The timing was very poor, with Wolves still battling for survival.

Cunha then got himself sent off in an FA Cup game against Bournemouth, letting his teammates down.

Thankfully, Wolves actually coped fine without him, but that could have been very damaging.

And then there was something that really irked fans.

Cunha posted the message on Instagram ‘Time to be happy. I will follow my dreams and yours… So stay cool’. He then deleted that after a lot of backlash.

He is now following his dreams at Manchester United, who are out of the Carabao Cup, aren’t in the Champions League, won’t compete for the Premier League title and struggle to finish in the European places, and only have one chance at silverware in the FA Cup.
