Disappointment for £10m player, but a genuinely big boost for Gary O’Neil and Wolves

Wolves fans know that AFCON is something that could impact the team this season – but Mario Lemina will not be leaving Molineux to go and play in the tournament.

That’s because Gabon have failed to qualify for the finals, which will take place from 13 January to 11 February.

The nation had the chance to go through to the finals on Saturday.

Three other teams in Group I all had the chance as well.

But Gabon lost 2-1 to Mauritania, and Sudan lost 2-0 to DR Congo.

It means that Wolves now do not need to worry about losing Lemina mid-season.

It is a great disappointment for the 30-year-old in not being able to qualify for an international tournament.

But there is no denying that this is great news for Wolves.

Mario Lemina staying with Wolves for the whole season is a big boost, as Gabon fail to quality for AFCON

It is a shame for Lemina, but Wolves fans will be quietly very happy about this.

Because Lemina is a fantastic player, who has made a real impact for Wanderers since coming to the club in January in £10 million transfer from Nice.

Lemina has brought steel, energy and aggression to the midfield.

He is a superb ball-winner, and is a great mentor for young Joao Gomes.

Not only is he a top player, but he is also one of the biggest characters and leaders in the dressing room now.

Had Wolves lost him to AFCON it would have been a blow.

But thankfully, Wolves now don’t have to consider that prospect.
