‘Different’: Matt Doherty speaks about one concern some Wolves fans have about him now he’s back

Matt Doherty has move to allay fears some Wolves fans have about him playing as a right-back.

The Republic of Ireland international was something of a surprise signing this summer.

The star came back to the club after three years away.

Doherty was a free agent after a brief stint at Atletico Madrid.

He is now looking to recapture the form he showed during his first spell at Molineux.

The system is now different to the one he left a few years ago to join Tottenham Hotspur.

But Doherty insists playing as a right-back as opposed to a right wing-back doesn’t faze him.

Matt Doherty ready for right-back challenge

Doherty has given an interview with the Express & Star ahead of his second spell with Wolves.

The star is very excited to get going, and believes good things can be achieved this term.

And the 31-year-old is more than ready to operate as a right-back if needs be.

He said: “It’ll be a different position. But the full-back role these days is a lot more advanced than it used to be. You can have midfielders dropping in and creating a back three when you’re building up. There’s different ways to find yourself in the box and creating chances.

“My natural game is obviously offensive and in a back four you can’t commit yourself as much. But it’s not going to stop me trying to help the team in a creative way.

“I was a full-back forever before we changed to a back three under Nuno. It was the first time I played wing-back and it worked out pretty well.

“I played left-back for two years in a back four at Wolves. It was the Championship but the Championship back then was a quite a good league and it wasn’t easy.

“Playing full-back is obviously different to wing-back, but I’ve had enough experience to adapt.”

Doherty has started well at Wolves, but big tests await

In pre-season, Doherty has looked pretty good for Wolves playing a right-back.

That said, it’s a small sample size and playing in the position in the Premier League will be a big test. Especially against teams that will have the lion’s share of possession.

Doherty was absolutely outstanding under Nuno Espirito Santo in the couple of seasons before he left the club.

He was arguably one of the very best wing-backs around.

Wolves do not play with wing-backs regularly anymore so it will be very interesting to see how Doherty gets on.

He seems quite confident, but the proof will be in the pudding.
