Dermot Gallagher says Wolves should have had a penalty against Brentford

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has today said that Wolves should have been awarded a penalty against Brentford.

Saturday saw Wanderers face Brentford at Molineux, and goals from Diego Costa and Hwang Hee-chan gave Julen Lopetegui a 2-0 win and another three points.

When Wolves were only 1-0 up though, a controversial incident happened in the game.

In the 52nd minute, Toti Gomes, who had been in the final third after a Wolves free-kick, went down under a challenge from David Raya.

The claims were waved away by Paul Tierney, and Stuart Attwell on VAR then reviewed the incident.

Unbelievably, but also unsurprisingly, Tierney’s decision ended up being upheld and no penalty was awarded.

Raya made clear contact with Toti after rushing him, and yet somehow no spot-kick was given.

Today, Dermot Gallagher has reviewed some contentious decisions from the weekend’s Premier League fixtures.

And in his eyes, Wolves should have had a penalty.

He said (via Sky Sports): “It’s a penalty, Raya doesn’t get the ball. Whether the referee decides Toti goes into the goalkeeper I don’t know, but the goalkeeper doesn’t get the ball, he gets the man.

“If the referee thinks he’s played the ball and the pictures show he hasn’t, the VAR has the opportunity to say it’s a clear and obvious error, but we don’t know what the referee fed back to them.”

Refereeing incompetence strikes again for Wolves, as Dermot Gallagher says Toti Gomes should have had a penalty vs Brentford

It’s good to see a former Premier League referee saying this and not covering for the embarrassing Tierney and Attwell.

It was a penalty all day long, and it is unfathomable that it was not given.

It is extremely tiresome, at this point, that Wolves keep having these decisions go against them.

Thankfully it didn’t matter in the end on Saturday.

But it is not acceptable, and it is important that these howlers do not get swept under the carpet.

There needs to be accountability. VAR on Saturday Attwell was the referee in the recent game between Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton in which several blunders were made. He should be suspended for this latest error.
