David Ornstein drops interesting prediction for Matheus Cunha’s new Wolves contract — would prove how serious Fosun are

Wolves are already experiencing a busy January transfer window – with it set to get even more hectic.

Vitor Pereira may not have been expecting to be so busy during the mid-season window but the Wolves manager is set for an important month.

While Mario Lemina remains a top target for Al Shabab and Sam Johnstone is another candidate to leave Wolves, the Old Gold are preparing to welcome Emmanuel Agbadou to Molineux from Stade Reims.

And although the side are well stocked when it comes to attackers, successfully tying one special player down on a new contract will be viewed as being as good as making a new signing.

David Ornstein confirms length of contract Wolves have offered Matheus Cunha

Matheus Cunha has arguably been the Old Gold’s most exciting attacker since he joined from Atletico Madrid 18 months ago.

The South American has already managed 39 direct contributions in 76 appearances in all competitions. However, although Wolves’ fans will be loving the 25-year-old and his impact, his form is attracting unwanted attention.

Cunha is linked with a transfer to Arsenal and appears to be heading for big things.

However, the striker may be forced to wait on a high-profile move after Wolves opened talks to extend his deal, which currently expires in 2027. Although an agreement has yet to be reached, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has confirmed both parties ‘are on the verge’.

“They (Wolves) are on the verge of signing Matheus Cunha to a new contract, which would come as a massive boost to everyone at Molineux. The deal that is proposed is four and a half years with the option of a further 12 months,” he told NBC Sports.

Going on to explain the finer details of the forward’s proposed new deal, Ornstein suggested a release clause would only be included if Wolves were to be relegated at the end of the season.

Wolves not interested in Cunha release clause

Explaining how Fosun — Wolves’ owners — don’t include release clause in players’ deals when the club is in the top flight, Ornstein added: “There is a conversation about a relegation release clause. But if they were to get relegated, he would leave anyway, so I think that’s largely a moot point.

”If they were to stay in the Premier League, there would be no release clause in this new deal. Wolves don’t offer those. He’s a top player. He has got interest from Arsenal and others in the so-called top six.”

Understandably keen to disregard inserting a minimum release clause into their best player’s new contract, which could run until 2030, Wolves’ hierarchy obviously plan to have full control in any future negotiations.

As for Cunha, with his development very much on an upward trajectory, it seems to be just a matter of time before he becomes one of Brazil’s first-choice forwards.
