Dave Edwards tells Vitor Pereira what Wolves need to do differently against Sunderland and Burnley

Dave Edwards thinks he knows why Wolves have struggled to win in the last two, and wants Vitor Pereira to change approach in the crucial fixtures after the international break.

This two-week break is a chance for Vitor Pereira to assess Wolves’ recent performances and identify areas to work on.

While the timing is unfortunate, with momentum clearly building, they can use this period to work on correcting the mistakes that have cost them three points.

Performances are certainly trending in the right direction, but the results haven’t really reflected that. Former Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards thinks he knows what the problem is.

Dave Edwards tells Vitor Pereira to stop reverting back to his old system

Both against Spurs and against Brighton, Pereira started the game with a back four. Wolves didn’t concede once when that was the case, but on both occasions they switched to five at the back later in the game.

Edwards wants the Wolves boss to stick to his guns when they return to action.

He writes for E&S: “When we’ve been playing a back four in the last three games, we haven’t conceded a goal and we’ve looked solid – we’ve only conceded when we’ve made changes and moved back to a five.

“Maybe that’s something for Vitor Pereira to think about, especially if you find yourself winning at Sunderland or you find yourself winning against Burnley. Go and take the game away from them.”

Wolves have lacked that kind of aggression needed to kill games, opting instead to sit in and invite pressure. When facing these newly promoted sides, Pereira cannot afford to throw away leads.

Edwards is right. Play the back four and stick to it. If Wolves go ahead, keep pushing for a second, and a third.

Pereira needs to find his best centre-back pairing

Pereira made the bold decision to drop Emmanuel Agbadou after a woeful few weeks to start the season. Toti Gomes was also pulled out of the line-up, despite having the armband.

That kind of ruthlessness is necessary when you’re struggling like Wolves have been, and it’s worked a treat.

Ladislav Krejci and Santi Bueno have started the last three games together, and they have looked solid.

Krejci looks like a nailed-on starter already after some quality displays that earned him Player of the Month. With the left-footer looking undroppable, it could spell trouble for Toti.

Bueno has exceeded expectations, but Pereira will surely want Agbadou to return to the level he showed last season and get back in the line-up.
