Dave Edwards shares 'the only way' Wolves might tie Ruben Neves down to a new contract

Dave Edwards believes the only way Wolves will be able to tie Ruben Neves down to a new contract is by agreeing to insert a release clause.

The midfielder is currently on the sidelines for Wolves.

He’s nursing a knee injury he picked up in the defeat against Leeds United before the last international break.

Despite him not featuring for Wolves, he is a player lots of rival fans are still talking about.

Neves will have been at Wolves for five years this summer.

He has been playing to a very high level this season, and quite a lot of supporters think this summer could be the time he moves on.

But there has also been some talk about Neves signing a new contract at Molineux.

Scott Sellars recently confirmed that the club and the player have opened discussions regarding that.

It remains to be seen if that’s something that gets done, but former Wolves midfielder Edwards reckons the maestro will want a release clause inserting if he is to agree an extension.

He said (Express & Star): “I think Lage is almost trying to scare people off with the £100million tag, but it’s somewhere near what I’d really expect as a fan. If they get offered £80m-£90m do you take it and reinvest in the squad?

“What they will try to do, I believe, is tie him down but have a release clause in there. That will surely be the only way he will sign a new deal.”

Dave Edwards could be spot on about Ruben Neves contract

You’ll be hard pressed to find a Wolves fan that doesn’t hope Neves extends his contract at Molineux.

He is a player with world-class potential, and it’s possible he could enter that bracket in the next couple of years.

He is going to leave Wolves at some point. Only a fool would think otherwise.

But Neves does love the club, the fans and the city of Wolverhampton. So it’s possible he could agree to extend.

But he’s also ambitious, and recently talked up the Champions League. It does feel as though he would want a release clause
