Dave Edwards shares the ‘one concern’ he already has over Wolves signing John Arias

Wolves are catching up with their Premier League rivals as their summer transfer window begins to take shape.

Wolves are closing in on the signing of Marc Pubill, with a deal for the right-back expected to be tied up in the next 24 hours after beating off interest from AC Milan.

Pubill could become Vitor Pereira’s third addition of the summer after capturing Fer Lopez in June, while a deal for Jhon Arias was agreed last week.

Arias was spotted at the Galeão Airport on Monday morning as he prepares to complete his medical at Wolves before finalising a move.

The 27-year-old promises to be an exciting addition to Pereira’s forward line, especially after starring at the Club World Cup, but there is one reason Dave Edwards has reservations over the signing.

Dave Edwards is concerned by the volume of football Jhon Arias has played in 2025

Wolves are no strangers to shopping in the South American market, with Arias becoming the latest gem they’ve unearthed from Brazil.

Last summer, Wolves signed Andre for £21 million from Fluminense, and they’ve repeated the trick by landing the Colombian in 2025.

Arias is seen as a direct replacement for Matheus Cunha, and although he has all of the physical and technical attributes to flourish in England, Edwards is concerned about the amount of football he’s already played in 2025.

In Brazil, the season starts in January, meaning the diminutive winger has already played 35 games in all competitions, something the former Wolves midfielder pointed out.

“The one concern I would say is that the way the South American season is run is that he’s already played 35 games since January, and that going into a Premier League season isn’t ideal,” Edwards wrote in his E&S column.

He did, however, state that Andre was an instant success after joining from Brazil’s top division, and perhaps Arias can follow suit.

“But we’ve seen it before with other players like Andre, and they’ve managed to finish the season strongly, so that’s a testament to their fitness,” Edwards finished.

Andre will have played a role in Arias joining Wolves

Andre shared a dressing room with Arias at Fluminense, and the Wolves midfielder would have no doubt played a contributing role to the Colombian joining the club.

The 24-year-old has only experienced success since swapping South America for the Premier League, becoming one of the best defensive midfielders in the division.

In sharing his reasons why he’s moving to Wolves, Arias praised Andre and Joao Gomes for their qualities.

“It’s a project that was presented to me, with great players. I don’t even need to talk about André, who you know here from Brazil, or João Gomes, who played for Flamengo, I faced him a lot, I know what a great player he is,” he confessed.

“Only there you can see that there are many South Americans known from Brazilian football.”
