Dave Edwards says Wolves star is ‘the best’ he’s ever seen at doing one thing

Dave Edwards was full of praise for Joao Gomes after his two-goal display for Wolves against Tottenham Hotspur – and the former Molineux midfielder also made a very big claim about the Brazilian.

Gomes made headlines on Saturday after he scored a rare brace for Wolves during a fantastic performance.

He struck in both halves for the visitors, as Gary O’Neil masterminded yet another brilliant result.

The three points keep Wolves firmly in contention for European football come the end of the season, and fans are so excited now for the coming weeks.

It may well have been Gomes’ best display ever in a Wolves shirt – and Edwards believes he actually has one trait that is the best he’s ever seen…

Gomes is not really known for his goalscoring, so there will likely not have been many people betting on him scoring a brace against Spurs.

But it’s nice to know he does have the capacity to get forward and score.

Wolves fans are much more used to seeing Gomes snapping into tackles and picking the pockets of opposition midfielders, which is a trait Dave Edwards absolutely loves in the 23-year-old.

He actually feels that there has never been a better ball-winner at Molineux than the South American.

He said (via his X account): “Off the ball he was incredible. As a midfielder when you go to press the opposition, more often than not, you’re just hoping they pass sideways or backwards. Of course you want to win it and 90% of the time you’re just hoping they don’t progress the ball forward.

“Gomes, every time he goes to compete for the ball, he is going to win it. He’s aggressive, he’s tenacious, he’s physical – he’d have been a nightmare to play against. I think, certainly in my lifetime watching Wolves, he is the best I’ve ever seen at winning the ball back.”

Gomes’ eye for ball-winning is incredible

It is quite remarkable to watch Gomes close people down and win the ball off them with relative ease.

The star is fantastic at taking the ball away in a ground duel, especially from behind with the way he wraps his leg around the opponent.

It is a big claim from Edwards, but it is difficult to recall a player ever seeing a player in old gold who was as effective as Gomes.

The one thing Gomes must do now is improve on the ball, as Gary O’Neil has urged. He’s not bad at the moment but could perhaps be tidier and more technical – once he brings this side of his game on, then Wolves will have one incredible player on their hands.
