Dave Edwards says Wolves need to get Raul Jimenez up to speed

Former Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards says the club must find a way of getting Raul Jimenez back up to speed.

The Mexico international has endured a frustrating start to the new season.

He missed the first couple of games after picking up a knee injury in pre-season.

He returned in the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, and then got himself on the scoresheet against Preston North End in the Carabao Cup.

But lackluster performances against Newcastle United and Bournemouth followed, and on Saturday Jimenez pulled out of the matchday squad to face Southampton after picking up a groin injury in the warm up.

Wolves signed Sasa Kalajdzic to provide competition and also support for Jimenez.

But the star suffered an ACL injury against the Saints, meaning Jimenez’s fitness has now become very important.

But even if Jimenez is able to stay fit, Wolves also need him to rediscover his mojo.

Edwards has been concerned with what he has seen so far from the 31-year-old, who is expected to be back in training this week ahead of the Liverpool clash.

He wrote in his latest Express & Star column: “Wolves need to work out a way to get Raul Jimenez up to speed, he’s been miles off it this season.

“The news on everybody’s lips at the moment is the reported potential free agent arrival of the famous Diego Costa, who sounds like he’s coming in to show his fitness ahead of a move.”

Raul Jimenez has indeed been disappointing, but he needs competition at Wolves

Unfortunately, it has been a poor start from Jimenez so far in 2022/23. Considering he looked really sharp in pre-season, it is frustrating.

The number nine just seems to be lacking confidence.

The one-on-one chance he had against Bournemouth last week was one he’d have put away every single time a couple of years ago.

But there was just a feeling of inevitability that he would miss, such is the form he is in at the moment.

You can tell watching him that he is deeply frustrated at the moment.

The injury to Kalajdzic is massively unfortunate as he could have been exactly what Jimenez needs in terms of someone else competing for his spot.

Hopefully, Wanderers are able to complete a deal for Diego Costa and the veteran is able to help Jimenez come good again.
