Dave Edwards says Matheus Cunha was at the heart of everything for Wolves against Brentford

Former Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards has hailed Matheus Cunha for his performance against Brentford on Saturday, suggesting the Brazilian was at the heart of everything.

Wanderers recorded another huge win in the Premier League, beating the Bees 2-0 at Molineux.

Julen Lopetegui’s side now have a bit of breathing room down at the bottom.

The gap to the relegation zone is now seven points. A win against Leicester City this weekend would practically assure the club’s safety.

It was a brilliant display from Wolves against Brentford.

And it was good to see Wolves creating chances and having shots on target. There were nine in total, which is very promising.

The performances of Cunha and Diego Costa were particularly good, and it’s clear there is a good understanding between the two of them.

And their partnership left Edwards impressed. He believes Cunha really relishes playing off a main striker, and was at the heart of everything on Saturday.

He said (Express & Star): “The shape gives so much more of an attacking threat, it provides someone like Diego Costa a chance to stay inside the penalty box and keep defenders pushed back.

“But, just as importantly, it allows Matheus Cunha – who has played up front quite often – to play in that number 10 role and for me there is no doubt that is where he plays his best football.

“I thought Cunha was terrific on Saturday. His link-up play with Costa was brilliant, he plays such intelligent bits of space on the pitch and knows when people are around him. He was at the heart of everything Wolves did from an attacking perspective.”

Matheus Cunha is really finding his feet now at Wolves – he will become a very important player

Cunha was struggling to convince people a couple of months ago.

But he is really starting to find his feet now, and definitely looks much more suited to playing just off the main striker.

He seems to have a great understanding of that position and where he should be.

And the £44 million star’s technical quality allows him to work well with Costa.

All that is missing from his game right now is that clinical finishing. Hopefully that will come later down the line.

At 23, Cunha is still far from the finished article. But he looks like he could eventually become a top player for Wolves.
