Dave Edwards says he would start Joao Gomes for Wolves against Chelsea

Dave Edwards has said he would start Joao Gomes in Saturday’s game against Chelsea, with Ruben Neves suspended for Wolves.

Julen Lopetegui is seeking to get his side back on track after a tough past few weeks.

Wanderers have faltered in the Premier League recently and have been royally sucked back into the relegation scrap.

Wolves now sit just one point above the drop zone.

There have been opportunities to pull away. But Wolves have struggled to do that, and some tough games now lie in wait.

On Saturday it’s Chelsea who are the visitors to Molineux.

While the Blues have struggled this season, it will be a tough game.

The Blues have just sacked Graham Potter, and the talk is that Frank Lampard is coming in as interim manager.

That is a very interesting scenario, and it could go one of two ways for Wolves on Saturday.

Lopetegui will currently be debating how best to cover the absence of Ruben Neves, who is serving a two-game suspension after picking up a 10th yellow card of the season against Nottingham Forest.

In the eyes of Edwards, Gomes should be the first port of call.

He said on the latest Wolves Weekly podcast: “If it was me, I would actually play Joao Gomes in midfield with Lemina. Be real combative in that midfield. They’ve both got legs, both can tackle, both get around. then I would play Matheus Nunes off the left, and then Cunha and Raul (up top). And on the right side then Sarabia probably. And Traore to come on.”

Gomes has made four appearances so far for Wolves since his January move from Flamengo.

His only start so far came against Leeds before the international break.

Lopetegui also may be considering Boubacar Traore, who recently returned from injury.

Joao Gomes should certainly be strongly considered to start against Chelsea in Neves’ absence

It would be great to see Gomes given the chance against Chelsea.

He will be raring to play following the suspension for Neves, and his energy and tenacity could unsettle the Chelsea midfield.

Boubacar Traore won’t have that match sharpness at the moment, and is probably going to be better coming off the bench. Moutinho is also better coming on as a substitute.

That does suggest Gomes as being a good option.

But Lopetegui could also go with a Lemina and Nunes as a midfield partnership, meaning a more natural option like Podence playing out on that left side.
