Dave Edwards has described new Wolves signing Goncalo Guedes as ‘an exciting addition’, but has also suggested he is a bit similar to current options.
The club completed a move for the 25-year-old on Monday evening.
Wolves moved to bring Guedes in, after losing their opening Premier League game against Leeds United.
Bruno Lage was unable to field a striker in that game, and it ultimately proved costly.
Although Hwang Hee-chan had a decent game leading the line, there was a lack of a cutting edge in the final third.
Guedes has now come in for Wolves, with the club splashing around £27.5 million to sign him.
The development has improved the mood of the fanbase slightly on social media. But many are now urging Wolves to go after an out-and-out centre-forward.
Edwards also wants to see the arrival of a proper number nine, believing Guedes to be quite similar to the likes of Hwang, Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence.
He said (Express & Star): “Goncalo Guedes is obviously very talented. I’ve seen him play on the odd occasion and since the news has broken I’ve sought out a lot of clips. It is an exciting addition.
“It does feel a bit similar to a lot players in already. He’s a winger, No.10 or attacking midfield-type player – I’d have loved to have seen Wolves spend the money on a centre-forward to play as a No.9.
“Somebody to compete with Raul Jimenez, when he’s back fit, and push the Mexican on. Someone with quality and experiences Guedes has.
“Wolves are very light. Lage will look around when he needs something and it’s unfair on someone like Chem Campbell to come on as the difference. A central midfielder and No. 9 are an absolute must.”
Guedes has the capacity to play anywhere across the frontline.
Last term for Valencia he did feature mainly centrally, either right up top or as a second striker.
He finished the campaign with 13 goals to his name.
Dave Edwards is right – Wolves definitely need another centre-forward after Goncalo Guedes’ arrival
Edwards is right – Wolves need to be signing another centre-forward now.
Guedes can play through the middle. But Lage has previously spoken about signing a striker who is capable of winning aerial duels.
Three options to play through the middle would be absolutely ideal for Wolves.
Hopefully recruitment officials will now be hard at work on other transfer deals after Guedes.
In recent days we have had reports of interest in the likes of Hwang Ui-jo, Ludovic Ajorque and Michy Batshuayi.
Should anyone of those players sign, then things will be looking up.
