Former Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards has given his thoughts about Scott Sellars, who is reportedly leaving the club.
It was reported last week (Express & Star) that the club’s technical director is set to depart the club, after becoming the focus of anger from many fans.
Sellars has been at Wolves for eight years, having initially joined the coaching staff.
He then became the head of the academy, before taking up his current post as technical director.
But Sellars’ time at Wolves is reportedly over following the arrival of Julen Lopetegui and his new coaching team.
The club also moved to bring in Fran Garagarza, who is taking up a technical advisor role.
Sellars was reportedly offered a different role, but has decided to move on.
A lot of Wolves fans had not been happy with Sellars’ contributions in recent times.
While he did not have the final say on transfers, he became the main target for criticism from many. And some chanted against him during the recent 4-0 defeat to Leicester City at Molineux. That surprised Steve Davis on the touchline.
Ex-Molineux star Edwards has reacted to the claims, and expressed his sympathy for Sellars.
He said (via Express & Star): “With the managerial situation, the form on the pitch and Fosun being quiet Sellars has been the man to take the criticism – maybe a little bit unjustly.
“I can only go off what I know about Scott from when I was at the club, and he is a terrific coach and a likeable guy who is very approachable.
“When you are the one at the top it is hard, but you know you are the one who is going to get criticism for it. If he does leave, then I am sure he will be proud of what he achieved at Wolves.
Scott Sellars made mistakes, but he probably didn’t deserve as much criticism as he got at Wolves
Sellars did make some mistakes at Wolves. But there’s no doubt there are others equally, if not more, responsible for the club’s current predicament.
Ultimately, it’s executive chairman Jeff Shi who signs off on major decisions at Molineux.
From what Edwards has said, it’s clear Sellars is a good man. And he has done some good work at the club in recent years.
But the struggles of recent times prompted Wolves fans to express strong opinions about him.
Perhaps it was just time for a change, and hopefully Wolves can have a fresh start following the arrival of Fran Garagarza.
