Dave Edwards points out one key reason why Wolves losing Yerson Mosquera is a major blow

Wolves are set to be without centre-back Yerson Mosquera for a period of time, after the defender was stretchered off in the 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

Mosquera had been playing well against the Villans, but he did not finish the game after going down under pressure from Morgan Rogers.

After several minutes of treatment, Mosquera left the pitch on a stretcher, much to the dismay of the travelling Wolves fans.

It had been suggested that Mosquera has suffered an MCL injury, and that he may also have suffered damage to the cruciate. Wolves have now officially confirmed the player has suffered MCL and ACL damage and likely won’t play again this season.

Wolves will likely be updating supporters soon about the defender’s condition, and hopefully there isn’t cruciate damage as has been suggested.

Dave Edwards has been speaking about Mosquera in his latest column, and he’s shared one reason losing Mosquera is especially bad.

Mosquera has started all of Wolves’ games in the Premier League so far this season.

It is clear that he has impressed manager Gary O’Neil, and fans had also really liked what they had seen from the Colombia international so far.

After impressing in pre-season, and out on loan at FC Cincinnati and Villarreal, Mosquera had started just as everyone had hoped he would.

But the star now looks set for a lengthy spell out.

As Wolves did not sign a new central defender in the summer, the situation is not good for O’Neil.

Edwards feels that there is one trait of Mosquera’s that Wolves will miss especially. He said in his latest E&S column: “Losing Yerson Mosquera was a huge blow because Santi Bueno is a capable defender, but the athleticism of Mosquera has really helped Wolves, especially when they play Craig Dawson alongside him.”

Wolves will miss Mosquera’s pace

One of the more impressive parts of Mosquera’s game is indeed his pace and athleticism.

As we know, Dawson is a brilliant, no-nonsense defender but he is certainly not quick and lacks that athleticism.

Wolves have looked a lot better at the back when Mosquera and Dawson have played together and that is perhaps because they both complement each other.

As Edwards suggests, £4.5 million Mosquera has the athleticism that can get Wolves out of trouble.

We will see how Wanderers manage without him. Bueno could be the man O’Neil turns to since the manager seems adamant the back four is to stay.

But Toti Gomes could easily come back if O’Neil wants a more athletic option.
