Dave Edwards happy Tony Roberts is staying at Wolves

Dave Edwards has expressed his happiness at the fact Tony Roberts is staying at Wolves.

Roberts is the first-team goalkeeper coach at Molineux, and had been a part of Bruno Lage’s coaching staff.

Lage was sacked at the beginning of October, with all his staff except for Roberts leaving the club with him.

Roberts then lent a hand to Steve Davis, along with James Collins, while Wolves searched for a new manager.

That search came to an end a few weeks ago, with Julen Lopetegui coming in after initially rejecting the club.

Lopetegui has brought in a new coaching team to help him get Wolves where they need to be, and some had wondered what would happen with Roberts.

It was initially reported that he would stay in his role for a few weeks before Lopetegui would take a decision on him.

But the Spaniard quickly decided that Roberts would be staying as part of his team, stating that he is a fan of the energy he brings.

Roberts is very well liked by all the players at Wolves, even though he obviously spends most of his time with the goalkeepers.

He is a great character, and that goes down well.

Former Molineux midfielder Edwards is delighted Roberts is staying, and thinks it’s the correct decision by Lopetegui and the club.

He said (via Express & Star): “I was really happy about the news of Tony Roberts staying on as goalkeeper coach.

“From knowing what he was like at Wales and speaking to him in and around Wolves, I know what a great person he is to have inside a football club.

“If you look from the outside sometimes he looks like a bundle of energy, and he can be a joker.

“But his technical knowledge and analysis of goalkeepers is fantastic.

“Lopetegui has looked at him and thought this is a guy he wants on his side, especially considering he knows the players so well.

“I think it helps to have a British coach in there as well.”

Tony Roberts decision was the right one by Wolves and Lopetegui, as Dave Edwards gives verdict

Roberts is an important figure at Wolves.

He is a lively character and the respect he has from all the players counts for a lot.

He’ll be key going forwards, especially given there is now a transition period.

Roberts will have a lot of knowledge about the players and how things work at the club which will be invaluable to Lopetegui and his coaches.

It would not have made any sense to move him on.
