Dave Edwards delivers new Mateus Mane verdict many Wolves fans will get behind after Brentford cameo

Wolves fell to a 2-0 defeat against Brentford, but Mateus Mane again caught the eye.

Wanderers produced another poor display with Keane Lewis-Potter’s brace earning the visitors all three points.

Wolves’ two points at Christmas is the joint-lowest tally ever, and there is now a 16-point gap to safety.

The situation is certainly looking bleak, but Wolves have had a shining light in recent weeks, with Mateus Mane again putting in a lively display.

The teenager has come on now in each of the last five Premier League games for Wolves, clearly indicating he’s a player Rob Edwards likes.

And the Wolves manager has now been handed a suggestion about Mane by Dave Edwards.

In the early part of the season, Mane was nowhere to be seen in the first-team, as Vitor Pereira focused on more experienced players.

But with Wolves failing to get results on the board, the clamour for Mane to get minutes started to increase.

Pereira did not give Mane any minutes before his sacking at the start of November, with the youngster finally getting his first opportunity from James Collins in the league game against Chelsea.

Under Rob Edwards though, Mane has regularly come off the bench and against Brentford, he was so positive. This following the great cameo he had at Arsenal, against whom he got an assist.

For Dave Edwards, it’s now time for Mane to start.

He said (via E&S): “A big positive coming on was Mateus Mane. The fans have been calling for him to start and I’m 50-50 with that because he makes such an impact coming off the bench when the game is a little bit spread.

“Can he do that from the start? Edwards is going to have to throw him in because he’s direct, tries to make things happen and that’s something that Wolves haven’t got.”

Mane has looked really lively in most of his substitute appearances so far, with his latest two against Arsenal and Brentford arguably being his best.

And after Saturday’s game, Edwards praised Mane, insisting he looks at home on the pitch. He said: “He’s beginning to look at home when he’s out on the pitch.

“I don’t think he’s someone who’s necessarily got some of the scars that one or two of the others are holding at the moment.

Is Mateus Mane starting vs Liverpool now not up for debate? 🤔

“It was a real positive performance again from Mateus.”

This verdict may well suggest Mane has a fantastic chance of actually starting against Liverpool.

Despite his inexperience at this level, he has clearly shown he is capable of making things happen, and Wolves need a spark right now.

It would be a huge moment for Mane to get given his first start away at Liverpool, but it would be no less than he deserves.
