Dave Edwards claims he heard Matheus Cunha say something he’s never heard another player say before

Matheus Cunha was the hero for Wolves in their latest game against Southampton.

Wolves got their first win of the season against the Saints at Molineux, with the 2-0 result potentially saving Gary O’Neil’s job.

Matheus Cunha provided a brilliant assist for Pablo Sarabia in the opening stages, cutting inside and driving to the box before playing the Spaniard in.

He then scored a long-range thunderbolt to get Wolves their first three points.

Dave Edwards has praised Cunha heavily for his exploits against the Saints. Edwards claimed Cunha’s display against Southampton was the best he’d ever been from a Wolves player.

Edwards also said Cunha reminded him of Bakary Sako.

Wolves fans were extremely relieved Cunha was on top form against Southampton.

Overall, it wasn’t a particularly great performance from the home side, who were perhaps let off the hook due to Southampton lacking an attacking threat.

In the end, Cunha was the difference with his assist and goal and after the game, he did some interviews.

Edwards was commentating on the game, and has told the Official Wolves Podcast that he heard Cunha say something he’s actually never heard from a player before.

He said: “I went down to the interview area after and I was listening to the interviews and he said a really interesting thing which I’ve not heard any player ever say before, where he says he now understands how important he is to the team.

“That might come across as a little bit arrogant, but it wasn’t. There was real maturity in the way he said it. he knows what his role is, and he understands that the players look up to him as the person who can carry them forward. It was a fabulous interview listening to him, and he does it with a big grin on his face.”

Cunha can win games on his own for Wolves

There can be little doubt at this point that Cunha is Wolves’ best player.

The Brazilian arrived at Molineux for big money and struggled initially after coming to the Premier League from La Liga.

But he’s been brilliant since the start of the 2023/24 season and O’Neil has to get a lot of credit for the work he’s done with him. He’s really got the best out of him, which was something Julen Loeptegui struggled to do.

And it’s refreshing to hear Cunha’s confidence. The star may carry a tiny bit of arrogance in the way he plays, but all the best players do and Cunha is certainly very humble too. Wolves simply need to allow him to express himself as much as possible.
