Danny Murphy slams Wolves after ‘basic errors’ left them with an ‘absolute mountain’ to climb

Danny Murphy has slammed Wolves for making ‘basic errors’ against Arsenal on Saturday afternoon which led to defeat.

Wolves would have been disappointed not to give the league leaders more of a game on Saturday. Up until Matheus Cunha‘s excellent goal, it was too easy for Mikel Arteta’s side to win 2-1.

Clearly, against the league’s top side, it’s difficult to criticise such a close loss, but Wolves weren’t great and have shown themselves to be better countless times this season.

In particular, Gary O’Neil was disappointed with his side’s defensive display whilst Bukayo Saka scored his opening goal.

Now Danny Murphy has also slammed this moment from Wolves.

Danny Murphy slams Wolves

Murphy was speaking on Match of the Day alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer where he gave his assessment of Wolves’ defensive display against Arsenal, particularly for Saka’s goal.

“Recently when they’ve played the bigger teams like  Man City, Spurs and Newcastle, they’ve defended really well, been very disciplined, had very good shape, gone with runners, all the things you’d expect to get a result against the big teams.

“But today they gave themselves an absolute mountain by making basic errors.

“They know they’re up against really good wide players so they get in good shape and double up and thats the right thing to do because you know how good he is.”

Murphy then criticised the fact several Wolves players were drawn toward the ball which left space for others like Takehiro Tomiyasu to assist Saka’s goal.

Wolves can put things right against Burnley

Next up for Wolves is Burnley in a mid-week fixture however that game now seems a lot more difficult than it did 24 hours ago.

Burnley will be brimming with confidence after thrashing Sheffield United 5-0, so it likely won’t be the assured win O’Neil would’ve wanted.

This however gives them a chance to prove themselves defensively against a team that can score goals.

However, after back-to-back losses, a win is pivotal for Wolves to get back on track.
