Daniel Podence sends message to Hwang Hee-chan after alleged racist remark in Wolves friendly

Daniel Podence has sent a public message to Hwang Hee-chan, after the winger was the subject of racist abuse on Monday night.

Wolves played against Como 1907 in a training match, and got off to a winning start, with Matt Doherty scoring.

Mario Lemina led the team as captain in the first half, and then Gary O’Neil put out a different team in the second 45.

Hwang Hee-chan and Daniel Podence were part of that second XI, and they would go on to become front and centre of one of the biggest stories of the week.

Hwang heard a Como player use a racist remark and reported it to the referee. Wolves players reacted angrily, and Podence then threw a punch at the player in question, leading to his dismissal.

Podence has been praised by fans for standing up for his teammate, and now the star has shown his support for Hwang again publicly.

There has been an outpouring of support from fans for Hwang since the incident on Monday evening.

Sadly, this was not the first time something like this has happened to the former RB Leipzig. Two pre-seasons ago, some SC Farense fans racially abused Hwang.

Following Monday night’s game, O’Neil asked Hwang if he had wanted to continue playing, giving the player the option of abandoning the match. He said that he did want to carry on.

O’Neil added that Hwang would receive full support from the club following his ordeal.

Wolves confirmed that they would be reporting the incident to UEFA. But inexplicably, they have stated they cannot investigate ‘because it was not a UEFA competition match’.

Lemina sent a message of support yesterday on his Instagram Story, writing the word ‘TOGETHER’ along with a picture of him and Hwang.

Hours later, Podence – the man who defended him in the heat of the moment – also took to social media.

Podence also uploaded a picture of him and Hwang, left a handshake emoji and tagged his teammate.

Huge respect to Podence

There will be some who have an issue with how Podence reacted on Monday night.

But ultimately, many have praised Podence for standing up for Hwang and against something that is disgusting and abhorrent.

It must be very heartwarming for Hwang to see someone who has actually been away from the club for a year on loan, come back in and have his back like he did.

It remains to be seen what will happen with Podence regarding his future as a Wolves player. But there are many now who are understandably hoping that he sticks around.
