Daniel Lopetegui played key role in signing of Joao Gomes

Wolves completed the signing of Joao Gomes a day before the transfer deadline to wrap up an excellent January window.

The club brought in six players in total, with the Brazilian turning out to be the final addition.

The move for Gomes appeared to be touch and go at one point.

That was after Lyon came in with a higher offer than Wolves’.

But Gomes was adamant he want to come to Molineux, and his stance is what ultimately helped the deal come to fruition.

Gomes is an exciting capture by Wolves.

The youngster has huge potential, and has already racked up a lot of games at the age of 21.

The Athletic have published a report on him this morning, and it details how Wolves actually looking at Gomes in 2021.

They contacted his agent last summer after scouting him for around a year.

Form this point on, Wolves were very attentive to Gomes. Matt Hobbs made several visits to Brazil to see him play live.

Wolves then changed manager, with Bruno Lage being sacked at the start of October.

Julen Lopetegui eventually came in, and there was potential for the interest in Gomes to dissipate.

Lopetegui had not actually heard of Gomes, but his son Daniel had.

Daniel gave enough of a positive report for Julen to then go and conduct his own research on the player. Julen requested videos of Gomes, and determined he really liked what he saw.

A key contribution from Daniel Lopetegui as Joao Gomes signs for Wolve

So Wolves were able to sign Gomes after Daniel Lopetegui threw his backing behind the midfielder.

Of course, the club had been looking at him for a while before signing him.

But it seems Daniel has made a key contribution here. Clearly, Julen regards his son’s knowledge highly.

Hopefully, Gomes is able to now live up to the hype. He will need some time to settle.

But by many accounts Wanderers have landed a really gem here.
