‘Crying now’… Wolves fans have the same sentiments as ‘incredible’ Ruben Neves clip resurfaces

It has not exactly been a smooth past few years at Wolves.

Wanderers now are in their seventh season as a top-flight club since gaining promotion back to the Premier League in 2018.

The first few years were great, with Nuno Espirito Santo guiding the club to back-to-back seventh place finishes, and also guiding the club to and FA Cup semi-final and Europa League quarter.

But it’s been relatively downhill for Wolves in the post-Covid 19 era.

Some fans believe that the investment from Fosun has simply not been the same, and that too many poor recruitment decisions have been made.

Certainly, many miss the good times, and are hopeful that current manager Vitor Pereira might bring them back.

One of the very best times for Wolves fans in recent memory was 5he run the club had in the Europa League and yesterday, the official account on X treated Wanderers supporters to that Ruben Neves goal.

After finishing seventh in the 2018/19 season, Wolves got to play in the UEFA Europa League in 2019/20.

Wolves had work to do firs though before reaching the group stages, entering at the second round qualifying round.

Wolves beat Crusaders, Pyunik and Torino – all over two legs – to make it into a group with Braga, Slovan Bratislava and Besiktas.

A second-place finish saw Wolves progress to the Round of 32.

Wolves then faced Espanyol, winning 4-0 at home and then losing 3-2 away to go through 6-1 on aggregate.

Ruben Neves scored a stunning volley against the Spanish side in the home win. A cross from Adama Traore was cleared to him on the edge of the box, and Neves did what Neves always did, and lashed a volley into the top corner.

And it got Wolves fans talking yesterday on social media, as the Europa League shared a clip of that goal with the caption ‘Incredible hit from Ruben Neves’.

@HeadInTheSkies said: “Those were the days ⚰️.”

@WolvesCharts24 added: “Days we’ll never see again until we get new owners in through the door 😩.”

@LTCWolf said: “What an unbelievable time to be a Wolves fan that was. Won’t see it as good again for a long time I’m afraid.”

@Wolves_OD added: “God I miss this – what a team we had 🥹”

Wolves can get back into Europe if Fosun want it

It has been a struggle for Wolves fans to deal with going from a run in the Europa League to fighting relegation from the Premier League.

Some see it as the owners neglecting the club.

Wolves have a lot of potential, with some good players and a good manager. But with the way Fosun operate in terms of wanting the club to be self-sustaining, it will be very difficult to return to the big time.

It’s understandable they want to adopt that kind of model. But there also has to be some risk-taking to break the mould.

If things continue as they have been doing the last few years, then Wolves can forget about challenging for Europe. Especially with so many other clubs – like Bournemouth, Brighton and Fulham, now doing their utmost to get in.
