Conor Coady once named the most fined player at Wolves, sometimes he didn’t even pay

It feels like a lifetime ago that Conor Coady was a Wolves player.

The star signed for the Old Gold back in 2015, joining from Huddersfield Town in a deal worth £2 million.

Conor Coady had initially started playing as a defensive midfielder, as he had done at Huddersfield and coming through the ranks at Liverpool.

But the arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo would change the course of his career, with Coady making the transition to the middle of a back three.

He would spend years in the heart of Wolves’ defence, and served the club extremely well, becoming captain along the way.

As skipper, Coady would be tasked with upholding standards – but there was one player who sometimes let those standards slip.

It is commonplace for football clubs to have fine lists in order to keep players in check.

Over time, fine lists have occasionally been leaked to the public, including from Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

Wolves enforce fines, although no list has ever been leaked to show what players can get done for at Compton Park.

But Coady did once reveal the player who used to get fined the most at Wolves.

And that player was none other than one of Coady’s defensive partners, Willy Boly.

He said in a video for the Soccer AM YouTube channel back in 2018: “That’s an easy one. Willy Boly! Willy Boly’s big for it.

“He’s always getting fined. Just little lates, here and there, like late for dinner. We all eat together and make sure we start at the same time.

“But he’s quite tight! He doesn’t pay, you’ve got to try and get it out of him.”

Coady then revealed that Will Norris was in charge of collecting the fines from players at that time, after Danny Batth went on loan to Middlesbrough.

Boly was a top defender for Wolves

Boly may have been able to avoid paying fines here and there, but there was certainly no doubting his ability during his prime.

The star signed for Wolves from FC Porto in 2017, arriving on loan initially to reunite with Nuno, before he turned the move permanent the following summer.

He would go on to make 147 appearances for Wolves and was a crucial component of Nuno’s system that used three central defenders and wing-backs.

At times the Ivorian was formidable, and he was especially strong in terms of winning aerial duels. He could also play though, with Coady once insisting Boly was a ‘fantastic footballer’.

He perhaps didn’t leave in the best fashion, with Bruno Lage claiming Boly didn’t turn up to Wolves’ game with Newcastle United in August 2022.

But Boly is surely right up there with some of the best centre-backs Wolves have had.
