Conor Coady now shares how Wolves left him ‘fuming’

Former Wolves centre-back and captain Conor Coady has now revealed how Wolves left him ‘fuming’ before he departed Molineux.

Conor Coady is one of the greatest captains Wolves have ever had.

The Liverpool-born defender spent an illustrious eight years at Molineux, captaining the side through several moments of success, including promotion to the Premier League and on their European journey.

During the Nuno Espirito Santo era, he was one of the first names on the team sheet and the presence and leadership he brought to their defence radiated through the rest of the team.

The Englishman even gained national recognition as Gareth Southgate handed him his England debut in the UEFA Nations League clash against Denmark in September 2020.

Coady amassed an incredible 317 appearances for Wolves and will go down as an icon in the club’s history books.

Unfortunately, a hugely successful eight years came to an end in acrimonious circumstances which left the 30-year-old feeling shocked.

Despite making 38 appearances in the 2021/22 campaign for Wolves, then-manager Bruno Lage wanted to shift him on.

The process of offloading Coady to another club was handled in the completely wrong fashion by Lage, who went behind his back by agreeing to sell him to Turkish side Trabzonspor without discussing his preference first.

Although the 30-year-old would go on to spend the season on loan at Everton, Coady explained how Wolves handled the situation left him angry.

Speaking on the More Than A Game Podcast, he said: “I was in the hotel and there was a phone call from a Turkish number.

“Then I got a message; ‘Conor can you ring me; this is the sporting director at Trabzonspor’. I passed him onto my agent, who rang me back and said, ‘Conor, they’ve agreed a fee with Wolves for you’. I was saying: ‘no, they’ve not told me anything!’.

“It left me fuming. So I went and spoke to Bruno, asked him what was going on. I was the captain of the club, I’d been there seven years, we’d been through some of the best times and nobody had said a word to me. If I wasn’t going to play, fine, but give me a heads-up because it was a huge year for me.”

How the Spaniard handled the situation of a player who gave so much during his time at Molineux is unforgivable and it meant Coady didn’t get the send-off he truly deserved.

After how this situation unravelled in 2022, Coady decided to join Leicester for £7 million last summer.

Although he’s since struggled to nail down a place in Enzo Maresca’s side, he will always be remembered as one of the greatest defenders to pull on the Wolves jersey in the modern era.
