Conor Coady lauds Toti Gomes after promising Wolves debut

Conor Coady has branded Toti Gomes’ Wolves debut ‘fantastic’, after the young defender shone at Molineux against Southampton on Sunday.

The 23-year-old was a shock name in the starting XI, having only recently returned to the club from his loan spell with Grasshoppers.

The Swiss league is currently on a winter break, and so Wolves felt it best to bring him back.

Most didn’t not expect him to feature for the first-team at all.

Wolves also recently recalled Dion Sanderson. Many thought he might be the man to step in and replace Romain Saiss.

But Gomes was picked to start against the Saints – and really did a great job.

The youngster looked totally at ease in possession, and made several perfectly-timed challenges. Someone watching Wolves for the first time would never have known he was making his Premier League debut.

It was a very promising outing from Gomes. And Coady made sure to shower the praise on him after the game.

He said (Wolves official website): “Fantastic. It was such a tough game for him to come in to. We’ve obviously lost Saiss, and he’s come in, he’s a left-footer, he’s been out on loan all season, but we’ve seen him training and he’s been quality.

“We’ve seen how strong he is on his one-v-one battles, but even on the ball, he’s so calm and I can’t explain how hard a game this was to come into.”

Wolves star Toti Gomes might just have given Lage something to think about

Wolves manager Bruno Lage has stated his desire to bring in another central defender this month.

But one wonders if he’ll feel happy enough to press ahead with Gomes as another option.

It really was a great showing from his against Southampton.

Him being left-footed is absolutely ideal, and it’s something that can keep Max Kilman on the right.

It won’t be too long until Romain Saiss is back at the club. And then there are injured stars Yerson Mosquera and Willy Boly to come back into the fold.
