Comical defending and FA Cup heartbreak – Wolves worst games of 2024, ranked

2024 will go down as one of the worst years of the modern era at Wolves as they spent most of it battling relegation in the Premier League.

The year started with so much promise under Gary O’Neil as Wolves secured wins over Brentford, West Brom and Brighton to reach the FA Cup quarter-final.

Wolves were knocked out by Coventry City in March, and from there, the year went downhill. Indeed, after threatening to gatecrash the European places, the Old Gold finished in 14th position.

A tough summer followed as O’Neil watched Max Kilman and Pedro Neto exit the club without sourcing quality replacements for the pair.

As a result, Wolves transfers failures were exposed under the Englishman and he was sacked in December after winning just two league games in eight months.

With Vitor Pereira now the new manager of Wolves, there is hope that 2025 can be far more prosperous for the Old Gold, who will want to erase 2024 from their memories.

Sadly, Molineux News has had a go at ranking their five worst games of 2024.

5) Wolves 2-3 Coventry City, March 2024

In March 2024, Wolves had an excellent opportunity to reach the semi-final of the FA Cup.

A tie against Championship side Coventry City beckoned, and O’Neil’s men would have been confident of reaching the last four.

However, their hopes were soon dashed as Ellis Simms put Coventry ahead just before the hour mark.

Rayan Ait-Nouri equalised before Hugo Bueno’s first Wolves goal put his side ahead in the 88th minute, completing a dramatic comeback.

From this point, a semi-final looked nailed on, though the Sky Blues struck in the 97th and 100th minute through Simms and Haji Wright to break Wolves hearts.

4) Man City 5-1 Wolves, May 2024

Towards the back end of 2023/24, Wolves visited Manchester City who were cantering towards a fourth successive Premier League title.

Expectations were low heading into the match as the Wanderers hadn’t won at the Etihad since 2019 when an Adama Traore brace clinched a 2-0 victory.

And unfortunately for Wolves, they arguably put in one of their worst performances of the season, as O’Neil’s side were on the receiving end of an Erling Haaland masterclass.

The Norwegian superstar scored four goals to help Pep Guardiola’s men secure a 5-1 thrashing.

3) Brentford 5-3 Wolves, October 2024

O’Neil may have been sacked in December however, the trip to Brentford in October felt like the beginning of the end for him.

Wolves were humiliated 5-3 by Brentford, and the fans called for O’Neil to be axed at full-time after watching a terrible performance.

The Wanderers produced some comical defending as some of their senior stars – most notably Mario Lemina – dropped howlers.

This was a match that fans wanted to quickly erase from their memories, especially after thousands made the trek down to West London.

2) Chelsea 6-2 Wolves, August 2024

In August, Wolves set the tone for an abysmal start to the season as Chelsea visited Molineux.

The game got off to a decent start for the hosts as goals from Matheus Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen put Wolves on level terms with Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer scoring for the Blues.

However, the second half couldn’t have gone any worse as Enzo Maresca’s side put four past Wolves with Noni Madueke running riot by firing in a hat-trick and Joao Felix rounding off the scoring.

Wolves’ 6-2 defeat against Chelsea was a sign of what was to come under O’Neil as lackadaisical defending and a lack of concentration continued to cost his side.

1) Everton 4-0 Wolves, December 2024

The worst game of 2024 for Wolves was inarguably their 4-0 loss to Everton.

Wanderers went into the game on the back of a 4-2 defeat against Bournemouth but were unable to issue a response and instead capitulated at Goodison Park.

An Everton side who failed to score in their previous four matches managed to hand Wolves a pasting. Craig Dawson scored two own-goals after Ashley Young and Orel Mangala netted for the hosts.

This game should have seen O’Neil get sacked but he somehow survived the next two games, resulting in defeats against West Ham and Ipswich.
